Viihdyn taidegrafiikan parissa, erityisesti olen tykästynyt puupiirrokseen. Menetelmä on yksinkertainen, mutta taipuu moneksi. Matriisin eli painolaatan luominen tapahtuu materiaalin armoilla ja muokattavuus riippuu puulajista. Puupiirroksen materiaalisuus sopii käsityöläismäiselle taiteilijuudelleni. Lopputulos on kahdesta tekijästä kiinni: matriisin ja paperin vuoropuhelusta sekä vedostamisen tapahtumasta.
Vedostamisen fyysinen toistuva akti, jossa kuva luodaan uudestaan ja uudestaan, luo tilan jossa vedostajan keho yhdistyy painovälineiden kanssa. Tällöin taiteilijasta tulee osa mekaniikkaa, kuin ihmistulostin. Tässä tilassa taiteellinen ajatteluni pääsee valloilleen eikä maailmassa ole sillä hetkellä muuta kuin minä, matriisi, värit, paperi ja prässi. Toistuvuus kääntää huomion automaattisesti siihen, mikä on kuvan toimivuuden kannalta olennaista ja tämä on se mikä jaksaa minua viehättää vuodesta toiseen.
I enjoy printmaking, and I’m particularly fond of woodcuts. The method is simple, but lends itself to many. The matrix, or printing plate, is created at the mercy of the material and the malleability depends on the type of wood. The materiality of woodcut suits my artisanal artistry. The end result depends on two factors: the dialogue between the matrix and the paper, and the act of printing.
The physical repetitive act of printing, where the image is created over and over again, creates a space where the body of the drawer merges with the print media. In this way, the artist becomes part of the mechanics, like a human printer. In this space, my artistic thinking is unleashed and there is nothing in the world at that moment but me, the matrix, the colours, the paper and the press. The repetition automatically turns my attention to what is essential for the image to work, and this is what keeps me fascinated year after year.
